Algorithms are all around us, helping us choose the right product to buy on Amazon, the best movie to watch on Netflix, the ideal person for us to date on Tinder and Match, the most helpful people to connect with on LinkedIn, and the most pertinent posts to read on Facebook. Algorithms drive connected devices and may soon be investing our money and driving us, as machine intelligence can connect devices to create IoT systems, like driverless cars. As algorithms touch our lives in deeper ways, we are reading more about algorithms gone awry. Media stories have covered the circulation of fake news stories by Facebook’s newsfeed algorithms, racism in algorithms used for sentencing and parole decisions, and many more examples. Some of the biggest issues surrounding algorithmic decision-making are not technical but at the interface of technology and social sciences. This talk will explore the implications of machine intelligence on our personal and professional lives.

Our Speaker, Kartik Hosanagar, has been recognized as one of the world’s top 40 business professors under 40. Scroll to the bottom of the page to read the rest of Professor Hosanagar's biography.
