About our Speaker: Judith Sheft

Judith SheftJudith Sheft is the Executive Director of the New Jersey Commission of Science, Innovation and Technology.  The Commission's mission is to accelerate economic development in New Jersey through science, innovation and technology including stimulating academic-industrial collaboration and encouraging and supporting entrepreneurs and inventors. Previously she was involved with regional economic and cluster development having responsibilities at the New Jersey Innovation Institute @ NJIT for the HealthIT Connections entrepreneurial cluster development program, the NJIT I-Corps Site and the Procurement Technical Assistance Center. She has been engaged with technology /IP innovation and commercialization efforts working with faculty and students to create startup companies and establishing licensing relationships with corporate partners.  She advised external startups at NJIT’s high technology / life sciences business accelerator/incubator.  She is on the Board of Advisors to the NJIT Murray Women’s Center and serves as a mentor and coach to students and faculty.   She is a member of the NJ – Israel Commission and serves on the Board of Greater Newark Enterprise Corporation, StartUp Newark, Women’s Center for Entrepreneurship Corporation, Einstein’s Alley, SheTek and NJEDA Technology Advisory Board, working to assist early stage tech and life sciences entrepreneurs foster regional economic growth. She was a co-chair of Governor Murphy’s transition advisory committee for Technology Government and Innovation (2017). 

Topic 2: COVID-19 Leave Benefits
A discussion on sick and family leave benefits that employees who cannot work or telework due to COVID-19 may be entitled to under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which types of employers are covered, whether an employer qualifies for an exemption, and how this leave interacts with NJ and NY paid sick and family leave.

About Our Speaker: Alix Rubin

Alix RubinAlix R. Rubin, Esq. founded Rubin Employment Law in 2010 to help employers and employees resolve their disputes cost effectively and with as little disruption to their businesses, and lives, as possible.  The firm advises businesses in best employment practices to help them prevent lawsuits and conducts internal workplace investigations of employee misconduct.  It also helps executives and professionals negotiate their employment and separation agreements.  Finally, Rubin Employment Law litigates on behalf of either the employer or the employee to favorably resolve disputes in the areas of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, whistle-blowing, employee classification, wage and hour, reductions in force, restrictive covenants, family and medical leave and reasonable accommodations.

Alix worked in public relations and journalism before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1996.  She is admitted to the bar in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Before starting her own firm, Alix was a litigation associate at two major New Jersey firms and a partner at the New Jersey office of a small New York firm.  She also is of counsel to Clark Guldin in Montclair.  Alix served on the Board of Trustees of Volunteer Lawyers for Justice from its inception and continues to contribute her time to the organization.  She also is a director of the Wharton Alumni Club of New Jersey.
